About the Black Book Project

In January 2020, the Black Book Project was created to collect books featuring African American characters for children in Nashville. Initially, Meredith McKinney set a goal of collecting 500 books by the end of February 2021 for Black History Month, which was quickly surpassed with over 1,000 books donated. Since then, we’ve distributed over 8,000 books!

The Black Book Project continues to meet the need for diverse books in Nashville and beyond. Our mission is to ensure that Black students have access to literature that reflects their identities. Representation is more important than ever, and through these books, we aim to empower young people - one book at a time.
